FFFFPhail

So here are some design ideas for SOMO that I decided against:

WARNING: Some of these are really bad...really really bad.
Unfinished Cover #1
Orignially for the DVD Booklet cover, I like the colors, I like the logo, but it just doesn't match anything...and the green..I was hellbent on using green in this cover but the more I look at it, the more I know its just not gonna happen.

DVD Cover Idea #2
There are alot of flaws and I really don't hate the design, with some work it could be pretty cool I think, but it just doesn't fit this video's whole vibe.
Logo Idea #1
This was actually the first Logo I designed for SOMO but decided against it...its just not that fun.
Logo Idea #2

Somo Logo #4I actually really like where this was heading but I didn't like how dark it was and that it resembles the font used in Star Wars waaay too much. I might actually revisit this guy for something else in the future though.

More Logos I won't be Using
The top and bottom logo's were created while I was making Tim's poster but I actually wound up using a play off of the middle logo for it instead.

Alternate Font I was making to us in Thomas Martin's Mock RB Poster.
Just dont' like it, I've been dying to get ahold of a legit Alternate font though.

Spot Check Logo Idea #1hahahahaha

Spot Check Logo #2
Spot Check was an idea for a section of the video, I've decided not to even use it though because I think in a video, its a bit redundant and I already have so much content that I don't want to overload anyone. I was so excited about this as I was making it though. I was hoping to replicate a similar movement like that in D-Strukt's 06 showreel at :45...I failed.

Home Grown Idea #1
This is a section that actually will be in the video featuring a bunch of really good locals, but this idea well...its not what i had in mind and its pretty wack. hahahaa.

I don't know if its the same as other people that design but I usually have like a million bad ideas before I come up with a good one that sticks. Its funny looking at the progression of such things.

But that's all for now. Sunday Session, holler.

A Thing...Or Two

Ok so I know this is really typical in the industry and I was really hoping I wouldn't have to do this but...I do. So, the video, is being delayed until May.

It sucks, I was really hoping things would have been sorted out by now but not having my computer for the past three months has really set things back. I just really want to have enough time for post production and I feel like if I have a solid two months to take care of business then i'll be able to create something people can really get excited about.

So sorry if that's a let down, but as long as there are no other crazy problems, there will be no more delays.

Glad that's aired out.

Also, in the last month or so, on some down time, I redesigned the SOMO logo.

When I initially made the first one, it started out as more of a rough draft and it was just never really finished, but I used it in the Trailer anyways cause that's how I roll.
When I started designing the DVD Booklet however, I realized the low res version wasn't cutting so, here is the new new:
Before
After

The overall look is the same. The main differences between the two are:
1. The Colors are richer and in 16-bit CMYK for print instead of the 8-bit RGB the older one was
2. It's still "grungy" but has a lot cleaner look
3. It's now a vector design
4. The letters are Kerned properly and more discernible
5. It looks alot better.

And that's about it for now.
Session this Sunday.

ATL Trip Part 2

Motherboard is on its way to being fixed, I'm estimating about 10 days before its shipped and about 13-15 before I see it again.

In some other awesome news Atlanta was really sick. Skated with alot of good dudes and got some really good footage from Mr. Mcmanus.

I wasn't really on the photography game this weekend though because my bud Kevin Dowling was on the photo quest to help Adam shoot for be-mag...maybe. I got a lot of good footage though and made some really sick connects over the weekend.

To give you something visual, here are some things I found while in Atlanta.

Monopoly Font!
Or Kabel Heavy for all you font geeks. I spotted it on the day pass to Kevin's house. I never realized how much I really enjoy this font, but it is quite curious.

The Jonah Watch
By: Jack Cady (1983) Whilst touring an abandoned jail in search of something to skate, I found loads of books littering the floor, and to be totally honest the Avaunt Gaurd (one of my favs) is what caught my eye. I did some reasearching as to see what kind of book it was, and contrary to my first guess of it being an "Invisible Man" type story, its actually a fictional, possibly autobiographical, story involving the Coast Gaurd. This review made it seem pretty interesting.
I'm pretty sure this particular cover is a reprint, here's the original.

Say Goodnight Gracie
In the same abandoned Jail, I found part of a book I believe to be titled "Say Goodnight Gracie." It has alot of really awesome Black and White pictures and some text that I've yet to read. Looked interesting anyways.

Well, that's all for now, we have a pretty decent session planned for next weekend and I'm sure I'll snap a couple flicks there, so stay tuned for that.

Goodbye Youtube, Hello Vimeo

I've had a Youtube account for the past three years of my life and I've managed to keep it updated virtually monthly with content that was reasonably tasteful. In that time, I've accumulated 60+ edits, gained Youtube some 112,000 plus hits and built a pretty decent little following. But now, with all this "matching third party content" nonsense, I'm moving on.

I decided that if I'm going to create something that has no other purpose than to be seen by people (not make money) I'm going to choose a medium that allows me to do so without all the mumbo jumbo in between.

On the Vimeo site, I've uploaded videos that have recently been blocked and will continue to upload more of my favorites/most viewed when my computer gets fixed.

So with no further introduction, here is the new and improved vimeo account without all the nonsense.

I'm not deleting the old Youtube account or anything, it'll still be there for them to pick apart the videos I have left. I'll also be posting a video (with no sound) with the same information you've seen here so that there is no confusion.

With that said, enjoy, and lookout for more edits soon.

A Trip to the A Part I

Holler. Well, the motherboard is in the mail and on its way to be fixed. But I've had alot of people asking if I even update the blog anymore so I figured I have to get on the ball with something to show or people would lose alot of interest soooo...

At about noon/noon thirty Tim and I arrive at our friend Heath's house in Atlanta and waste no time getting to the skating. The first spot is a great ledge with alot of potential for lines and best of all its right down from Heath's house. So after Tim laces a few lines, Smiley and Brandon Nessler meet up with us. From here we're off on our day of skating.

Now the whole day the weather was below freezing, it was actually so cold that water fountains in downtown Atlanta had frozen over, but we're off skating nonetheless. After a couple clips at a couple of different ledge spots, Heath takes us to these awesome little artistic sculputures in the middle of Atlanta.
We also filmed a couple of lines here and Smiley came through with this really clean fishbrain up and across this curve:
So from this spot we're off again to this stair ledge that you might just recognize from the IMYTA in ATL.
Just about as soon as we arrive and check out the spot...it begins to snow, and we have the video to prove it. But despite the temperature/precipitation Smiley comes through with a couple tricks and this pretty clean photo of a back royale:
He also laced a really clean fish but my batteries for the GL had mysteriously died the spot before so there's no real documentation besides the mental sort, sorry Smiley.

At this point, its freezing, snowing and time for us to get in doors. So after a couple slices and a few Beers at Felini's, we headed back to Heath's house for a night of drinking, skate videos, chess, and a great time.

The next morning, we all get up, get to some grub then part ways with Heath and head to this awesome cement park we've all been hearing about, Duncan Creek.

Thanks to some directions from my ATL buddy Richard Williams, we get there and have a blast. So much so that I didn't even think to break out the camera.

However, we did stop at these pretty cool road gates on our way out and got a good couple pictures/video there.

Smiley with the TTS...up:
Brandon did this makio, amongst a list of cool tricks:
After all this it was time to head back home and get ready for the week to come.
So we part ways and that pretty much concludes our Trip to the A...to be continued, next week.
Now that the ball is really rolling on getting the computer fixed editing will begin soon, stay tuned for updates.

Also, if you're interested in a couple more photos from the trip check out my flickr.

Some Interesting things.

Computer...still not fixed. However, my friend Riley Hilsman came over with an external hard drive and threw done about 20-22 gigs of footy.

He basically gave me his hard drive and let me take whatever I wanted, which was awesome, because I not only got alot of much needed footage. But I got enough footage for a full Montre Livingston profile, and I found alot of really old edits and really old footage that eventually I'll put online.

This edit...well its pretty old but pretty awesome, not to mention has one of my favorite tricks I've ever done in my life! :P

So for the time being, hope you enjoyed the edit and I'm trying to really really get my computer fixed this week.
